The Volleyballers have only 2 weeks until Nationals. Both the Girls and Boys A have secured the Top3 BOP seedings and continue to have very competitive matches against our local Bay teams. The intense Volleyball BOP Competition with 39 teams competing over 6 days has seen the 2nd round completed with our Boys Senior C team performing very well. With wins over Te Puke, Kawerau and Whakatane A teams this team is matching the game of these more senior players playing a great standard of game. With a changed format for Nationals this year the race to get into the Top 32 seeding has created a very intense competition. BOP Champs this weekend will see all teams playing in Tauranga with double points at stake for teams. School athletics finals day was held in great conditions with only one record broken this year in the Senior girls 3000m. Anna-Lisa Uttley ran a very smart time of 10.28.47 and is working towards representing NZ at the Oceania meet soon. The Year 9 Relays were won by 9JTC and the Year 10 10JDH At the BOP Athletics day held Wednesday 3rd Anna-Lisa Uttley won the 3000m Senior Girls with a blistering 10.17.85 . Her 1500m was 4.53.00. Both of these runs were a new BOP record. Also outstanding was Emma Jackson with a PB for the Senior Girls 400m of 59.57sec Congratulations to you both. Other athletes to place 1st in their events at this BOP meet were Aneta Buckley SG Shot Put, Claudia Richardson JG High Jump, Joseph Reynolds IB Hurdles, Josh Mason JB Javelin, Nathanael Butler JB Hurdles, Robert Sargent SB High Jump, Tamati Jory SB Discus, Vanessa Hill SG Hurdles. JG Triple Jump Sophie Tingey. A team of 80 athletes represented Otumoetai College at this large meet on the new track at the Domain. Our rowers are all over in Karapiro this weekend contesting the North Island Regatta. The girls cricket team had a good win against the Te Puke Outlaws on Saturday. Sam Davis put in a stand out performance at the crease and totalled 57 runs not out. Taylor Forward was the team’s top bowler with 2 wickets for 7 runs off 4 overs.

Our rowers had a very successful regatta on Karapiro with multiple crews making A Finals. Megan Thurlow/ Leah Mcmahon got 3rd in the A final for the Girls under 16 double. Ethan Inglis/ Jeffery Brayshaw got 1st in the A final for the boys under 16 double.Ethan Inglis, Jeffery Brayshaw, Mathew Dearsley, Jamie Moore and cox Regan Phibbs got 2nd in the A final for the boys under 16 quad. Joshua Houlton/ Cameron Robertson got 1st in the A final for the boys under 17 double.Joshua Houlton, Cameron Robertson, Ethan Inglis, Jamie Russell and cox Regan Phibbs got 4th in the A final for the boys under 17 quad. Cameron Robertson got 8th in the A final for the boys under 17 single.
Our Gillette Senior Boys Cricket team are performing really well with wins over Bethlehem advancing them to the next round

After a summer of training our U14’s Surf Lifesavers were gutted to miss out on finals day at the Ocean athletes. To reach the finals in their events was an impressive result for Jessica Lacy, Katie Wilson and Liam Hesp.
The BOP Tennis event saw 15 athletes compete with Natalie Bray / Claudia Jones performing well in the Div 1 Girls Doubles being runners up . The school athletics day was held yesterday. We look forward to the Finals day this Friday. The 3 teams playing in the Monday night Golf Penants team started this week. Cricket is progressing well with the 1st XI Green team just missing a victory versus TBC Colts 89 ,J Duggan 3/7, J Tisch 3/8, T Klyen 3/10 Otumoetai 84 Otum 2nd Xl beat Aquinas . Otumoetai 1st XI White posted a total of 183 - 8 (40 overs) . Good batting from Julian Bradley – 67 ,Chris Charlton – 40 , Mitchell Hancock - quick 26 Our standout bowlers were Richard Garlick - 3 wickets ,Kieran McSweeney - 2 wickets and Jaskaran Singh - 2 wickets Aquinas 184 - 8 in 35 overs Our competitive Volleyball teams have now started the BOP Competition which will lead to seedings for Nationals. 4 Girls and 3 Boys teams have entered.
Beach Volleyball Nationals The NZ SS Beach Nationals were hosted in Gisborne this last weekend. In hot , windy, dusty conditions 30 athletes ventured down to compete. A gold medal for Holly Boyle and Katie Wood in the Junior Girls grade is a fantastic achievement after their indoor Gold last December. James Gilling and Charlie Clague performed well in the difficult conditions with a creditable Bronze placing in the Junior Boys grade. In the senior Girls grade best placed was Alyse Barclay and Aneta Buckley coming 4th. The 6 senior Boys teams all finished in the Top 16 (of 32) with best performers Griffin Muller and Andrew Bray placed 6th.
Cricket After a good buildup with more players showing interest in this game we are all waiting for the first games this weekend. With most girls moving up from the talented Intermediate squad it is great to be able to field a Girls Team. Our Junior Gillette Boys teams travelled to Gisborne to face Gisborne Boys for a place in the Top 8. A 164 run haul with Chris Charlton 37 and Joel Duggan 27 runs was not quite enough with Gisborne eventual winners with 4 wickets to spare.
Volleyball The popular Year 9 Competition started last Friday with the Kiwi Volleyball Comp getting underway this Friday. A fantastic result on the Volleyball National scene with the Junior North Island Tournament held in Rotorua during the past week. With 42 girls and 48 boys teams competing the competition was fierce with the some awesome skills for this younger age group displayed.
Coach Keith Macown had a tough road through to the quarters meeting fancied Trident Girls but coming through with a 25-17, 25-18 win to advance to the semis. The semi against Havelock North saw a superb game by the girls completing dominating this game and taking apart a team who had progressed through with some impressive wins. A 25-13, 25-11 win was an indication to everyone that our team meant business and were ready for the final against the local rivals Bethlehem.
With a fantastic closely fought game, a great display of kill blocks and an awesome team effort, the girls were victorious 26-24 , 25-23. Captain Holly Boyle, Katie Wood and Amy Hunter were named in the Tournament team with MVP of the Tournament Amy Hunter. As always in any team sport the rest of the team was so important to this win. Those members were Alex Keating, Abi May, Georgia Tyrrell, Laura Thompson, Baillie Malbon, Natalie Bray and Gemma Ellis.
Our Boys Junior A also performed really well. Meeting Trident (Winners of the Tourney) in the quarters was always going to be a good match up. The boys played really well but went down 25-23 , 25-20. This bumped them out of the medals chance but they had a great win over Otahuhu 25-23 , 26-24 to make the 5th/6th playoff. A match against local rivals Tga Boys saw a real team performance and victorious 25-20, 25-17. With only one lose for the Tournament they can be very proud of their efforts. Team members were Captain James Gilling, Bard Hurn, Liam Matheson, Charlie Clague, Neal Redward, Adam Morgan, Mark Nicholls, Kyran Stone, Brad Shaw (injured).
The 9A Girls were a very creditable 9th place in Div 2 with huge improvements over the past 8 weeks made by these young athletes. The 10B Girls were placed 12th in Div 3. The 9A Boys were 15th in Div 3 with the Junior B Boys 10th in Div 2.
The 1st XI Cricket boys had a home game against the TBC Colts and after 40 overs were 186 for 3 wickets. Rising star Chris Atkinson batted to 41 well supported by Julian Bradley on 39. The Colts team were all out for 43 with Chris Atkinson again featuring with the amazing figures of 6 wickets for 8 runs.
Double Gold and a Silver for our Year 10 Beach volleyball athletes who attended the inaugural VNZ North Island Junior Beach Champs. It was an all Otumoetai final in the Girls with Holly Boyle/Katie Wood taking out the final against Amy Hunter/Abi May. James Gilling/Charlie Clague were Gold medal winners in the Yr 10 Boys grade. With 26 teams competing it was great display of skills after a tough week at the indoor Programme. Congratulations also to Abbie Meredith/Jessica Lacy Silver medalists in the Yr 9 Girls and Julia Hartley/Kaitlyn Maclean taking the Bronze.
The BOP Beach Volleyball event was held in near perfect conditions last Saturday with a good turnout of teams. 40 athletes enjoyed the day with some good results. Alyse Barclay and Aneta Buckley finished 3rd in Senior Girls playing a good style of beach volleyball. Two Yr 9 teams of Abbie Meredith and Jessica Lacy along with Julia Hartley and Kaitlyn Maclean reached the Top 8 in the Juniors. All the Otumoetai teams were drawn on the same side of the draw so the Year 10’s knocked out the Year 9’s and Holly Boyle and Katie wood went on to win the BOP Junior title after beating Amy Hunter and Abi May (who finished 3rd) in the semi final in a tight game.
In the Boys grade James Gilling and Charlie Clague finished runners up in Junior Boys grade with Dein church /Mark Whitaker and Morgan Stone/ Neal Redward also making the Top 8. 5 of the Senior Boys teams made the Top 8 but missed the medals this year. Griffen Muller and Andrew Bray were the best performers.
The cricketers had a bit of a wake up call this week with an uncharacteristic performance against BC. Plenty of training going in this week with the automatic bowling machine coming out.
The afterschool Thursday coaching Programme for Hockey and Basketball continues to be well attended. A lot of in school programmes happening soon with multiple opportunities to try out different sports.
Samantha Charlton has been awarded a University of Canterbury Emerging Leaders Scholarship. Congratulations on this reward for all the hard work she has put into her sports of Hockey, Beach Volleyball and Indoor Volleyball.
The Cricket Boys have started their Competitions really well with the Yr 9 Gillette Cup team having a victory over TBC. Top scorers were Chris Charlton with 70 runs and Vaughan Wilson with 48.
The 1st XI had a great bat against Aquinas with 228/6 after 40 overs. Mitchell Hancock was so close to his century but was denied at 96 after 40 overs. The team then bowled poorly and let it slip away.
Congratulations to Underwater Hockey players to achieve selection into the Mid Northern Under 18 Representative teams. Katrina Lynam, Rachael Nicholls, Candice Wilkinson and Victoria Wood. Anton Williams and Nick Milne.
The Junior Volleyballers have completed their first round of the BOP Champs. With all teams maintaining their Top 12 rankings the next round will see them working hard on their preparation for North Islands.
Otumoetai College have announced their 2009 Sports Awards. With 140 recipients over 25 different sports the Elite Awards are as follows.
Junior Sports Girl of the Year is Holly Boyle.

Big news of the week is Amy Christophers selection into the Magic team for 2010.
Two years in the NZ Sec School Netball team along side other numerous elite achievements in Volleyball and Athletics has seen Amy reap the rewards of many years of hard dedicated trainings. Best of all Amy is a great person, respected by her peers and has been a fantastic role model for our students. Congratulations !
Bradley Shaw and Madison Read continue to improve on the Golf course with a bit of history created in winning the Booth shield back to the Bay. Bradley now playing off a 8 handicap was 2nd in the Net comp with 62. Madison playing off a 19 netted 61.
The Volleyball teams are off to a good start with 20 teams playing weekly. Our elite teams are focusing on the BOP Comp over a 6 day period culminating in the North Island champs at the end of the month.Past pupil Rachel Morgan was named Collegiate Player of the Week in the American Volleyball League. Making a name for herself is becoming a regular occurrence for Rachel this season.
The BOP Tennis Champs were held with a small team competing. Our best performers were Natalie Bray and Claudia Jones who won silver in the Div One Girls Doubles.
Cricket is underway with a great start by the Yr9 Gillete Cup team who travelled to Trident for their match. Chris Charlton had a good partnership with Jack Tisch. At one stage Jack was 3 wickets for 1 run after 5 overs. Very impressive. A win by 30 runs was a good result. The 1st XI have also started with a good win over TBC, Chris Atkinson scored 80 runs.

Attending BOP Secondary School events are of high priority with many sports choosing to advance to a National Tournament. Many athletes have achieved Representative status with our talented ones reaching age group World Champs status.
